Intel Nexus - Cyber Security
Traditional cybersecurity training often fails because it focuses on definitions rather than decisions. When employees are bombarded with technical jargon and generic “click-next” slides, they tune out, leaving the organization vulnerable. The gap isn’t a lack of information; it’s a lack of engagement, creating a disconnect where learners know the rules but fail to apply them when a real threat appears.
Cybersecurity 101 bridges this gap by replacing passive compliance with a cinematic, narrative-driven training. Set within “Intel Nexus,” an elite fictional agency, the experience transforms the learner from a passive observer into an active recruit. It is a scalable, cross-functional solution that builds immediate behavioral instinct in a risk-free environment, proving that compliance training doesn’t have to be boring to be effective.
The challenge
The hardware isn’t the problem, the people are. Industry research confirms that over 90% of successful cyber breaches are caused by human error, not technical failure. With the average cost of a data breach reaching $4.88 million in 2024, a single moment of employee inattention can be catastrophic.
For most employees, cybersecurity training is a chore, an annual “tick-the-box” exercise filled with abstract threats and dry policy text. This creates “Cyber Fatigue,” where users disengage and rush through content just to finish, retaining almost nothing.
The Villain: Passive Learning
Standard eLearning modules failed to connect the risk to the individual. They treated cybersecurity as an IT problem, not a personal responsibility. Organizations need a way to shatter this apathy and force learners to care about data privacy, password protocols, and AI safety without requiring a technical background.
Designing a solution
The Strategy: Narrative-Driven Microlearning
To combat “compliance fatigue,” I designed a cinematic onboarding experience. Each 5–7 minute lesson within the fictional Intel Nexus agency uses storytelling to transform abstract policy into a personal mission. To keep the experience practical and immersive, I established a serious, “painterly” visual style, inspired by games like GTA or Red Dead Redemption, utilizing cold color palettes and high-tech digital interfaces.
Leveraging character-driven storytelling
I distilled the curriculum into the three most critical aspects of cybersecurity. To make these topics tangible, I designed a diverse cast of characters with distinct backgrounds and personalities. By anchoring specific lessons to specific characters, the cognitive load is reduced, making it much easier for learners to recall the concepts. To ensure active practice, these characters guide learners through realistic “Test Your Instinct” scenarios, forcing them to double-check their assumptions before any theory is introduced.
My Role
I owned the end-to-end architecture: scripting narrative arcs, designing interaction mechanics, and directing the voice acting, with real voice over actors. To achieve this premium feel, I developed the responsive course in Articulate Rise, leveraging the capabilities of Storyline and custom coding. Over 80% of the course consists of custom blocks, combining seamless portability with interactivity.
The result
The impact: Validating the “Instinct” Model
This deliverable is a fully functional, highly interactive Articulate Rise prototype. While built as a portfolio concept (not a live rollout), it validates a stronger compliance approach: “Test Your Instinct” scenarios assess real-time risk judgment instead of passive recall. It also proves that complex security habits can be taught in 5–7 minute micro-sessions that fit smoothly into daily work.
The reach: A ross Ecosystem
Because the narrative focuses on universal human errors (phishing, passwords, public Wi-Fi), the experience is 100% role-agnostic—deployable to everyone from interns to the C-suite. The AAA-game-inspired visual style delivers a ‘Netflix-grade’ user experience that commands attention and is fully responsive across mobile, tablet, and desktop immediately upon launch.
The architecture: Pushing the limits of Rise
Under the hood, the 80% custom block framework shatters the predictable “template” look of standard eLearning. By integrating cinematic assets and simulated OS interfaces into a modular Rise structure, I engineered a scalable ecosystem. It feels like a bespoke, high-end app to the user, but retains the frictionless ease-of-update that corporate L&D teams require.
